What I Do
Every project is different. These are the core skills I bring — honed over 20 years on cathedrals, palaces, and listed buildings across England.
Architectural Carving
Bespoke carved stonework for heritage buildings — capitals, corbels, finials, crockets, bosses, and ornamental mouldings. Each piece carved by hand to match the original in material, technique, and finish.
Setting-Out
Full-size templates and technical drawings for complex stone elements. Precise geometric setting-out for arches, tracery, vaulting ribs, and decorative programmes — the critical first step in any carved commission.
Carved Indents
Replacement of decayed stone sections using precisely fitted indents. The new stone is cut to marry perfectly with the existing fabric, preserving as much original material as possible while restoring structural integrity.
Figurative Sculpture
Carved figures, heads, green men, heraldic beasts, and portrait heads. Working from historic references or creating new designs sympathetic to the building's period and style.
Lettering & Inscription
Hand-carved lettering in stone — memorial inscriptions, foundation stones, date stones, and commemorative plaques. Roman, Gothic, and contemporary letterforms cut with precision.
Technical Masonry
Structural stone repairs, pinning, consolidation, and mortar analysis. Understanding the building as a structural system — not just its decorative surface — ensures repairs that perform for centuries.
Modelling & Maquettes
Clay and plaster models for approval before carving begins. Allows client review of complex three-dimensional work at full or reduced scale, ensuring the finished piece meets expectations.
Conservation Reports
Condition surveys, stone identification, decay mapping, and specification writing. Providing the technical documentation that Listed Building Consent applications require.
